Help Painting Chin Spoiler
Fellow Limers...need help with what I did wrong. Got my new fiberglass chin spoiler last week...primered it...painted it...installed it...drove through a construction zone...now the proud owner of tens of paint chips. I let it cure 24 hrs between primer and paint...paint and installation. It was above 50 degrees during primer and paint, but overnight temps were in mid 30s. Used Krylon paint. Should I try it again doing something different? Or just let a paint shop do it? Thanks!!!

Bobby, i have done this 7 or 8 times now. I used a bed liner, or undercoating beneath the paint. I am assuming you painted it black , or other color since i haven't seen P1 in Krylon. The undercoating helps with the rock chips, Cure time is important, the more the better.

Thanks Robert and Berny! Both have been very helpful. I'll wait till the weather turns warmer, strip it, prep it using Berny's link, use the bed liner Robert recommended, and allow more cure time. I know I have to be careful and prevent the stripper from absorbing into the fiberglass. Any other advice?
Thanks!

Is the Krylon paint suitable for fiberglass? Krylon makes and epoxy paint that is more suitable for fiberglass as it bonds better. Make sure your primer is epoxy based as well.

You can also go to ppg.com and find the tech sheet for plastic preperation. If this is a new part there will be release agents from the factory that will have to be removed, as well as using a adhesion promotor. Remember prep is the key.

Okay...I'm new to body work...so here are my lessons learned: 1. Preparation is key. Clean and sand. Remove the release agents. 2. Use an adhesive promoter. 3. Use an epoxy-based primer. 4. Use an epoxy-based paint, or possibly spray liner. 5. Cure time is very important.
Thanks my Lime family!!! I'll try again when the weather warms up.
Meanwhile, I've attached a pic of it's current state.
